Hi, I read that a DC-DC converter is needed when one wants to use the same power source on circuits that require different voltages. What about voltage regulator? Some robot builders put a voltage regulator in their robots but some don’t. When do we need to do that?
I’ve been a big fan of the Pololu regulators (https://www.pololu.com/category/84/regulators-and-power-supplies). I’ve mostly used them to provide a clean voltage for cameras and microcontrollers or embedded computers like the raspberry pi. Typically, I used the fixed voltage varieties instead of the adjustable kind.
Of course, I’m not using one to drive my lower voltage motor in the airsoft gear box. The current requirement is just too high.
Thank you. How do I know if I need a regulator or not?
Well, what voltages do you have to supply? Identify you requirements and then you can build a plan to support them.
